The environmental planning of the whole built environment at all scales from urban planning to interior design must now take into account the principles of sustainable development. Addressing planning on environmental criteria can bring about major changes in the quality of the natural environment and reverse its decline.

The main objectives pursued in environmental planning can be summarised in four:
1) Creating conditions of comfort
2) Creation of a space of high environmental quality
3) maximising energy gains and minimising energy losses of the space
4) Exploitation of natural energy sources

In the first stage, the designer is asked to interpret the main climatic factors that make up the climate of the area under study throughout the year. These factors are temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity and solar radiation.

In the second stage, a study of the chlorine to be designed in relation to the geography and climate of the area is carried out. Understanding the path of the sun in relation to the site and the openings, understanding the prevailing winds and any obstacles that may exist and the general conditions within the site is an important process that must precede the design. Identifying and documenting problems is the first step towards creating proposals that aim to design with environmental values.

In the third stage, a correlation is made between the climatic conditions investigated and the analysis of the space under study, its function and the needs of its users.

Finally, in the fourth stage, design solutions are proposed to achieve the four initial objectives as far as possible in order to create a design that respects the environment and the user.

Addressing the following nine issues in an integrated environmental space approach:
1. Energy
2. Solarization
3. Ventilation
4. Passive Design
5. Comfort - Visual, Thermal, Acoustic
6. Lighting
7. Materials
8. Outdoor Environment Space
9. Environmental diversity
